Hot Rods Heat Up the Concours

1952 Chet Herbert “Beast III” Streamliner
Second place for Hot Rods at Pebble Beach this year went to this devilishly numbered, aerodynamic looking streamliner. It was the fastest single-engine car on the salt in 1952, when Art Chrisman achieved 238 mph at Bonneville using a 331-cubic-inch Chrysler Hemi (the swoopy-shaped car would later break more records using a 425-cubic-inch GMC diesel engine). Chet Herbert designed the car using a 1/10th scale model in the Cal Tech wind tunnel, which marked the first time wind tunnels were used for streamliners.
